There are generally two types of insomnia. Where you struggle to get to sleep, and where you get to sleep, but cannot maintain it. Which effects you?
You must decide whether you really have insomnia. In a study by Stepanski et al (1988) he discovered that a large amount of people who complained of insomnia were sleeping more than they realised, and getting an adequate amount of sleep.
See if you can get a partner or friends to monitor how much sleep you really get. Trust their results – you may be surprised! It may be that you need to improve your diet and do more exercise in order to have more energy during the day.
Psychological issues such as stress and anxiety are commonly linked to insomnia. That’s why my Relaxation Hypnosis MP3 is an excellent aid to sleep. This session gives you the option to stay asleep once the session is over, giving a huge help drifting off to sleep. Breathing exercises and meditation also help.
You can also help insomnia yourself by avoiding stimulants such as tea, coffee and alcohol in the evening. Avoid late night studying or watching complicated TV or films, as this may over-stimulate your mind. Light reading and easy viewing is fine, and may help you drift off to sleep. Avoid napping during the day, as this extra rest may prevent you from being tired later.
If possible, stick to regular times to go to bed and wake up. This gets your mind and body into a loop where you know when to sleep.
For some it helps to go to bed later than usual, when you feel tired. Once in bed, don’t worry about going to sleep. Assure yourself that the rest you are getting lying in bed is as beneficial as sleeping. This helps remove anxiety associated with worrying about not sleeping.
If you need more help with sleep problems, drift into a peaceful relaxing sleep right now with my Super Sleep hypnosis audio
Want better eyesight? Here I will show you how to improve your vision naturally with these simple but powerful exercises.
Opticians will never show you these as they like to charge you for vision aids. It’s a sad state of affairs, but that’s business for you.
Your eyes grow lazy and more dependant when wearing glasses or contacts. They deteriorate as your muscles get weaker, until the optician can sell you stronger pairs of overpriced glasses. Your eyes gradually get worse, and they get repeat sales.
Opticians do not help prevent eye sight deterioration, let alone help eye sight improvement. They have no incentive to.
I will show you how to improve your vision naturally and beat the optician.
First, be aware of these things that could be harming your vision…
The three common faults of vision are:
1. Not using peripheral vision
2. Staring without focussing
3. Not moving your eyes enough.
All these occur whilst watching TV or a computer screen. TV viewing should be restricted to an hour a day, especially for children. You should be at least 3 meters away from the screen, preferably further. It is helpful to sit with good posture as this will help the blood flow around your body and to your eyes.
If you work on computers all day then it is going to be more difficult for you to limit your viewing. Instead you should look away from the computer as much as possible – at least once every half an hour.
Quick exercise…
Look at something about 6 meters away for about 10 seconds. Really focus on it. Let your eyes do some work. This will help strengthen the muscles. Then look at something about 3 meters away for about 10 seconds, and again really focus on it.
Repeat this with a few different objects at different distances every half an hour. This keeps your eye muscles strong. If you manage to keep this up, you will massively reduce the deterioration of your eyes.
As with most things in the human body – use it or lose it. The same goes for your eyes. When they are staring into space or at a 2D screen, they are not doing much work. You must exercise them to keep them healthy.
Here are some eye exercises…
Pencil Exercise
Hold a pencil arms length in front of you. Focus on the tip of that pencil. Once you have it focussed, slowly move it towards you whilst still maintaining the focus. See how close you can get it before losing focus.
Swinging
Focus on a distant object, swaying gently from side to side. Do this for a few minutes every day, blinking as you sway. The blinking helps clean and lubricate your eyes, which is important if you spend a lot of time in front of a computer.
Clothesline
Japanese studies show this exercise can significantly improve your eyesight if done regularly. Place a picture on a clothesline. Stand about a foot away from it and focus on the picture whilst it is moving. Move back a foot and repeat. Continue with this until you are about 10 feet away.
Candle Exercise
Eye sight is not just about your eyes. It is also about the eye brain relationship. Your brain must interpret what the eyes pick up. This exercise aims to improve your brain/eye connection.
Put your self in a quiet, dark place and look at a lighted candle. Focus your attention at the blue part of the flame and blink gently. After a minute or two try to imagine the lighted flame with your eyes closed.
If the visualization is not perfect, again look at the blue part of the flame and try to imagine the same without making any effort. When you are able to visualize the flame in your imagination open your eyes.
Colour Day
Choose a colour and look out for it throughout the day wherever you go. When you see the particular colour, be aware of it. Don’t bother with the shape of the object, just experience the colour and it’s subtle shadings. This also helps your eye/brain connection.
Sunning
Try to do this daily. It may be difficult if you live somewhere like the UK! Close your eyes. Look directly at the sun through your closed eyes. While facing the sun, slowly rotate your head from side to side as far as you can. This gets the sunlight in your peripheral vision, and it helps bring more blood circulation to your neck. Do this for a few minutes. Enjoy the warming soothing feeling of the sun on your eyes.
Eye Massage
This exercise helps improve the blood circulation to your eye muscles.
With the index fingers of both hands apply LIGHT pressure on your upper eyebrow and move in a circular motion whilst your eyes are closed. Do these as often as you can – several times a day if you can manage it. After finishing this, gently make a circular movement on your eyes to relax them and improve vision.
Now You Know How To Improve Your Vision Naturally!
You want to be healthy yes? Most people when adopting a healthy lifestyle think about diet and exercise. This is good. A good balanced diet with plenty of natural unprocessed foods can go a long way to keep you healthy and happy.
If you want to be REALLY healthy then there is another thing you should consider…
Air.
Air intake is a largely neglected consideration for most. It shouldn’t be. You need to breath almost constantly in order to survive. You can only live a few minutes without it. Your air is more crucial to your survival than food and water.
It stands to reason that if you can improve the quality of your air, your health will improve. That’s why quitting smoking can greatly benefit your overall health and well-being. The quality of your air intake does count. That’s why it’s important to learn how to improve the air you breathe…
Practical tips
It is not practical for most of us to do a Michael Jackson and sleep in an oxygen tank. However there are things you can do to increase the quality of your air…
Regularly aerate your house
In the mornings I open most of the windows in my house. If it is in the winter I may only do this for a few hours. In the summer they are normally open all day. I even leave my back door open in the summer. I like to make sure that the air in my house stays fresh, and is no older than a day old.
Leave the house every day
Is is important to have some outdoor time every day in order to get some of the really good stuff in your lungs. Some people buy dogs so they have a reason to walk every day. If you don’t like walking, how about a drive in the countryside with the windows down? You could even stop for ten minutes and to stretch your legs and breath in some lovely fresh air.
Move house
I know this isn’t practical, but if you live in a polluted area then you could consider moving to a place where the air is cleaner. The further away from busy roads and factories, the better. Places higher up tend to have the freshest and cleanest air.
Buy an air filter
If moving house isn’t an option, then you could buy an air filter. A good air filter can make a massive difference to the quality of air in your home. I recommend the Hamilton Beach True Air Allergen Reducer. It is cheap to buy, and run. You don’t need to buy new filters. Simply vacuum the permanent filter every now and then to clear it out.
You’ll be surprised how much dirt it pulls from the air. It’s better for dust and debris to be collected in the filter than it is in your lungs. Check out all the positive reviews of the Hamilton Beach True Air Allergen Reducer – you won’t be disappointed.
Reduce your fibres
Most carpets and furniture create a lot of dust in the air. Instead of carpets, try getting wood flooring. It may cost a bit more than carpets initially, but they last a lot longer and you will save cash in the long run. Also leather seating, rather than fabric, gives off hardly any pollutants in your air.
Learn how to breath properly
Breathing slowly and deeply is a healthy way of breathing. Shallow breathers tend to not expel much air, which leaves old stale air in their lungs. A few times a day I consciously breathe slowly and deeply, being mindful to breath out all my old air. This is also great for stress relief and relaxation.
Get some indoor plants
Indoor plants do filter out some pollutants, and will add some extra oxygen to your air during the day. They also look good and help you to feel happier and more relaxed.
Quit smoking
This is a no-brainer really, but I thought I’d better add it to complete this article. Quitting smoking will obviously improve the quality of your air intake. It will also improve the air of those around you. If you must smoke, then at least do it outside. It will help those around you, and you too. Don’t add constant passive smoking to your smoking habit. (I now offer a complete quit smoking hypnotherapy pack. Unlike most systems, it offer support before, during, and after quitting.)
Final thoughts
Now you have some knowledge on How To Improve The Air You Breathe. Whilst I would recommend diet and exercise, I would also recommend that you consider your air intake as part of your overall health regime. Just a few simple tweaks to your lifestyle can have a great effect on the air that you breath.

As we have already discussed, IBS is strongly linked to stress and hypnotherapy is great for reliving this. There are also a few food types to avoid, and some to eat a lot more of…
Avoid (but you need not eliminate)
Dairy products – A high percentage of people with IBS are really lactose intolerant. Either get a test for lactose intolerance from your Doctor, or give up dairy products for a few days and see how it goes.
Fatty foods – You know what they are. Fried foods, chocolate, mayonnaise, etc.
Acidic foods – Apples, oranges, vinegar, cider, wine, etc.
Coffee, coffee, coffee! – Sorry coffee lovers, but you could try decaf, or cut down.
Embrace
Fibre – Many people with IBS report vast improvements by increasing fibre in their diets. The non-soluble type, found in bran, fruit, vegetables, and whole grains are best.
Fluid – Generally drink between six and eight glasses of water per day, preferably water.
Alcohol – Didn’t I say avoid it? Yes, but a little of what you fancy does you good. If you must drink, avoid red wine and beer. The complex carbohydrates in beer and the tannin in red wine cause the most distress.
Exercise – Exercise strengthens the body, and hence the bowels. It can also reduce stress, and release endorphins, which help control pain.
Hypnotherapy is great at treating IBS. It helps relax you AND modify your behaviours…

Want to know what does hypnosis feels like? Read on…
When people find out that I am a clinical hypnotherapist, I usually get asked a series of questions. They often begin with -Can you hypnotise me now?- lead to -Can you help me quit smoking?- and end on -What does hypnosis feel like?-
What Does Hypnosis Feel Like?
Well…it feels different to different people. Some people go deeper than others. They seem to be able to relax to a deeper level, whilst others may only go to a light trance.
Usually the more hypnosis you have experienced, the more able you are to go into a deeper level of trance. It is a skill on the subject to be able to allow their minds to go to a deeper level of trance. The only way for me to describe what a hypnotic trance feels like, is to tell you about my personal experiences of hypnosis…
I remember quite clearly the first time I was a hypnosis subject. It was in 2002 on my first day as a student of the London College of Clinical Hypnotherapy. We did all the usual college stuff of signing forms, introducing ourselves etc. Once all this was out of the way our teacher, Maurice Sterndale, said that he would do a group demonstration of hypnosis. I got quite excited by this. I had wondered what hypnosis was like for years. I must admit, curiosity was one of my motivating factors in deciding to enrol.
He asked the class to close their eyes. Inwardly I began feeling a bit worried. I was thinking “I don’t really know him, or anyone here, and I’m surrendering all my control?” However I quickly got over this as I reasoned that this was one of the reasons that I was here – to experience a hypnotic trance.
I closed my eyes, and could feel my heart beating quicker. Paranoid thoughts started to enter my mind. I had never seen a demonstration of clinical hypnotherapy before. The only hypnosis I had witnessed was stage hypnosis, and that was as an observer, not a subject. What if he was going to single me out and make me do something embarrassing in order to demonstrate the magical powers of hypnosis? What if he turns me into a chicken for everyone’s amusement? I opened my eyes slightly, and slyly peeped around. He was still stood at the front, phew!
I allowed my eyes to close once more, and began listening to his words. He talked in a slow comforting voice, softly whispering at times. At first Maurice asked us to focus on our breathing, directing us to take slow deep breaths. This immediately began to calm me down. My heart began to slow, and I felt comfortably relaxed.
He gave suggestions of walking down steps, feeling deeper and deeper relaxed with each step down. Every time he said the words ‘deeper relax’ I felt a wave of relaxation surge through my brain, and flow down my whole body. “This is alright” I thought.
Soon I began thinking to myself “I can still hear him. I still know who I am, and where I am…Is this it?” I felt pleasantly comfortable and relaxed, but was a little disappointed that nothing ‘magical’ was happening.
After taking stock of my thoughts for a few moments, I reasoned that actually I do not want anything ‘magical’ to happen to me. I didn’t want to be changed into a singing and dancing Elvis for everyone else’s amusement.
My mind quickly countered “Maybe something magical IS happening to me. How do I know that I can move my hand? How do I know if I have control? What if this control is just an illusion?” I though to myself, “Shall I try and move my hand? Yes, let’s see what happens”. I delicately twitched the fingers in my left hand, just a little. They still work! I can still move!
No one was ‘in control’ of me. This shattered my perception of hypnosis, but at the same time comforted me. “This feels like meditation” I concluded. “I could stand up and walk out of the room any time I choose”. “All this hype about hypnosis is wrong”. Then the strangest thing happened to me.
I could hear Maurice counting “Eight, nine, ten, and fully wide awake, fully wide awake” as my mind seemed to be lifted back to reality. With my blinking eyes I scanned my hazy vision around the room at the other students, who were also looking around the room with their glazed expressions. I noticed my hands felt a little cold.
After a few seconds I managed to re orientate myself back to reality, and I looked at the clock. 15 minutes had passed, but it only seemed like 5 – weird! I felt calmer and more relaxed than I probably had ever felt in my whole life. Nothing weird or ‘magical’ had happened, but it worked, I felt calm and relaxed. I felt great!
As I drove the 20 miles journey back home at the end of the session, I had plenty of time to recap the days’ events. I realised that I had walked into the college with a warped perception of hypnosis. A perception that was shaped and distorted by the stage shows and the snippets of scare mongering I had read in the press. I couldn’t believe that I had fallen for it.
I couldn’t believe that I thought that you could control someone’s mind with a few carefully chosen words. It doesn’t make sense. Bank robbers would do it, advertisers would do it, and everyone would be doing it. What a fool I had been all these years!
By the end of that day I realised that clinical hypnotherapy was not about power or control. It was about relaxing the mind and helping people make the changes that they wanted to make. Working WITH the subject, rather than against them. That is the real power, and the real magic of hypnosis.
I also learnt that most people naturally go into hypnotic states several times per day. When you are deeply engrossed in a book or a film, you are experiencing a hypnotic trance. Many people slip into a hypnotic trance when driving. They can drive for many miles without consciously thinking, without realising that they are driving!
If any emergency occurs when driving in this state, you can immediately snap out of it and take the appropriate action. You have experienced a trance many times, and you do have some idea already how it feels. It isn’t all that strange, magical or mysterious; it is calming, relaxing and very pleasant.
Although everyone’s experience of hypnosis will be personal and slightly different, I hope I have managed to get across some of what hypnotherapy feels like. A hypnotic trance is simply a naturally relaxed state of mind, which almost everyone can achieve at some level. You are still you, and you are still fully in control.
