Coping with anger is an issue for many of us. I’m sure you know what anger feels like, and have felt it bubbling inside you…

Anger itself is not bad; it is part of your emotional armour from back in our past “fight or flight” stage. Like stress, anger gives you the motivation to get up and do something.

But anger, if not dealt with, can grow into a destructive force. It can become both verbally and physically harmful to yourself and others. To cope with your anger you need to accept the cause.

coping with angerWhat makes you angry? – Is it being ignored? Shouted at? Treated poorly in comparison to others? Mistakes you’ve made? Mistakes others made? Feeling humiliated? Criticism? Others being angry with you?

Who are you most commonly angry with? – Your partner? Your children? Family? Friends? Work colleagues? Strangers?

How do you express your anger? – Do you ignore it until you “blow up”? Blame others? Violent thoughts?

Who are you comfortable with expressing your anger? – Your partner? A close neighbour or friend? A parent? No-one?

How to cope with anger? To cope with anger, you have to accept responsibility for your anger. Instead of thinking “you/they made me angry” say to yourself “I am angry”.

It is not other people who make you angry – it is you who responds to them in a “negative” away. Take the attitude that it is YOUR responsibility to how to react. No one can MAKE you angry.

How do you go about calming yourself down? Here’s some methods…

Breathing exercises – When you are angry your breathing often becomes short and shallow. When this happens take note and start taking deep breaths. Picture the oxygen flowing around your body, refreshing your mind and improving your circulation. For specific breathing exercises please visit this article.

A calm word or phrase – Pick a word or phrase such as “cool down”, “relax” or “take it easy” and repeat it to yourself while taking long, deep breaths.

Light Exercise – If possible join a local yoga or tai chi class/course. You will learn how to relax your muscles and release any “negative” energy.

Imagery – Imagine yourself in a “happy place”. This can be somewhere you’ve been in the past, somewhere you would like to go or somewhere you’ve made up. It should be a place where you can relax and unwind without a care in the world.

Hypnotherapy – Hypnotherapy is fantastic for helping you de-stress and relax.

Can White Noise Help Me?

What is white noise?

White noise is a random scattering of all the audible sounds your ear can hear. It contains all the frequencies played at the same time randomly together.

You could be forgiven to think this would sound chaotic and distressing. However most people feel calmed and relaxed when listening to white noises.

Examples of white noise  include the crackling of an old radio, the sound of rain, rustling of leaves, and the sound of the sea. These are all pretty calming sounds right?

What can white noise help with?

White noise is great for blocking out distracting background noises and sounds. This is one reason why many people experience relaxation and pleasure when listening to the sea. Many people use white noises to enhance relaxation and meditation.

A lot of people report that white noise helps them sleep. Many people with sleep problems can be helped with white noise playing whilst they drift off.

White noise can also help a person concentrate, ease stress, and help with self hypnosis.

How does white noise work?white noise

White noise helps distracting noises fade into the other noises so they no longer distract. These sounds blend into the rest of the white noise. Then there are no sounds that stand out and catch your attention. It’s nothing like hypnosis!

White noise guides your mind away from conscious thought. White noise blocks out cues to think in a conscious way, allowing a more creative and relaxed frame of mind.

Many people strongly believe that white noise carries therapeutic qualities because it is a similar sound to what we experience when in the womb before birth. Many parents note that their babies settle and fall asleep when driving in the car with a humming engine, or even with the noise of a vacuum cleaner. It seems that at least part of this natural inclination stays with us later in life.

Why is it named white noise?

White noise has its name because of its similarities to white light. White light is a combination of all the colours in the spectrum mixed together. This is why a rainbow is formed when the sunlight hits the rain. The colours are split to display the spectrum of different colours. White noise is similar as it is made up of all the sounds combined together.

Other colours

There are several other coloured sounds. The most notable are pink noise and brown noise. Pink noise focusses more on the lower tones, although it does still contain some of the higher frequencies. Pink noise sounds smoother and less busy than white noise. Pink noise is useful for helping you relax whilst still maintaining focus and energy.

Brown noise has a greater emphasis on the lower frequencies. This deeper sounding noise is helpful for promoting deep sleep, easing headaches, and masking tinnitus.

Breathing Exercises For Health And Energy

Correct breathing can make a huge difference to how you feel. It’s difficult to feel upset or angry when you are breathing slowly, deeply and quietly. It is also a great way to help you sleep.

Try this most basic breathing exercise right now…

Breathing ExercisesTake one deep breath, and slowly breathe out. That’s it!

Do you feel more alert and energized now? Lack of oxygen in the blood can make you feel tired, and can cause headaches.

A few deep breaths lowers anxiety, ease mild indigestion, and help you wake up and go to sleep.

Meditation, which is similar to hypnosis, is also very effective at reducing stress. Try these simple breathing exercises daily, or at least when you are feeling stressed and need some time out…

Get yourself comfortable, you can lie or sit. Make sure you won’t be disturbed for about half an hour. Subdue the lighting. Close your eyes if it helps, or better still keep them half open.

Breath as naturally as you can, and count each out breath up to ten. When at ten, start back at one again. Repeat this for about 20 minutes. Notice how your breath is warmer when exhaled. Listen to the sound of the breathing through your body. Enjoy!

Optional Extra

When you are relaxed and comfortable, repeat to yourself a keyword such as “relax”. After a minute or two, tell yourself that whenever you say your keyword, no matter where you are or what you are doing, you will return to this state of relaxation.

Try this in various different situations in your day to day life, you will be amazed at the results!

The Alternative Nostril Breath

Sit or lie in a comfortable position. Breathe in through the left nostril (you may need to use a finger to keep your right nostril closed), and hold for a relaxed ten count. Now exhale gently out of the right nostril.

Repeat this breathing in through your right nostril with your and exhaling out of the left. The whole process should be repeated about 5 times

This is great for energising and relaxing, and clearing your sinuses.

Usually when someone tries to influence you, they take the stance of how the decision would benefit them if they were in your position. They are not you. Something that is right for them is not necessarily right for you.

It’s always worth listening to advice. However it’s your life, your decision, and you who must face the consequences if things ‘go wrong’. You should always make the decision yourself, especially if there are manipulators in your life. Do you think that innovators such as Edison, Einstein, Da Vinci or Mozart blindly followed others advice?

Be Your Own Boss (Of Your Life)Many of us were conditioned in early life to surrender our power. Our parents, family, teachers, society etc. taught us to be followers rather than leaders. Do any of these rules look familiar?

  • Be quiet
  • Don’t get too big for your boots
  • Be seen and not heard
  • Think of others before you think of yourself
  • Be happy with what you have got
  • Don’t show off
  • Do as you are told
  • Don’t be a know it all
  • Don’t get too excited
  • Be modest
  • Do not answer back

These suggestions are bombarded into the brains of children for many years. Whilst the intention is good, they do not help in later life. They leave us dependent on other’s permission and opinions to lead us.

Most people are too afraid to quit their job and start their own business; too afraid to ask their boss for a raise; too afraid to ‘sell themselves’ at job interviews; don’t believe they can (or should be) great at anything. Great people like Nelson Mandela and Muhammed Ali were certainly not afraid to be great, and make a difference.

Instead of these limiting viewpoints, how about adopting these instead…

  • Be ambitious
  • Don’t be modest
  • Think big
  • Be noticed
  • Be enthusiastic about your ideas
  • Be proud of yourself
  • Have confidence in your abilities
  • Be brave
  • Do not apologise if you have done nothing wrong

There is a great person in each and every one of us. It can be unlocked by believing in ourselves, and having the courage to follow our ideas. What use is a shrinking violet to the world? Does the world really admire these people? Do you admire these people?

Let go of these limiting suggestions of your past and embrace new positive ways of being. Go for the things you want in life. Be seen. Be heard. Be proud. Be successful. You deserve it!
